Proudly South African business
Founded in 1986 by three South African entrepreneurs who had originally worked together in the electronic measurement industry, these pioneers saw the opportunity to venture into their own business, and Impro Technologies was born.
A key strength of the business was the expertise of the founders in both engineering and sales. This was to prove invaluable when they saw an opportunity to use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in a new application – that of access control.
Impro became one of the first companies in the world to adopt RFID and quickly became pioneers in the technology. This resulted in the business developing innovative new products that revolutionized the access control industry, and achieved tremendous growth for the group.
After some 30 years of private ownership, in December 2015 the global ASSA ABLOY group acquired Impro Technologies, providing a new level of expansion for the business into untapped markets. The other significant benefit for Impro was the adoption of new technologies from the group, to ensure our continued innovation and leadership in the access control industry.
Global player, local partner
Today, the business employs some 140 full-time employees and has grown to become a multi-million Rand enterprise with a footprint throughout Africa, Europe, Asia and the USA. In fact, we now export products to over 60 countries around the world.
Whilst our company is a global player in the access control industry, through an extensive network of distributors and dealers, we are also a local partner. This established network of companies has been built up over many years and provides customers with peace-of-mind support and local knowledge and expertise.
However, Africa remains our home base with our headquarters situated in Durban, on the East Coast of South Africa, which also houses our manufacturing, R&D and engineering sectors.
